Bible Bites: 10 Practical Ways to Grow Your Gratitude
Part of me wanted to title this, “The Grinch’s Guide to Fixing a Grumpy Heart.”
As I’m writing that I’m sitting in the living quarters of a horse trailer while we spend the weekend at my daughter’s rodeo. That means, early mornings, hours of travel, food on the go, and cramped quarters. It’s going great said no rodeo mom ever! LOL. We got here late; they called her name – we weren’t ready; her “coach” (Aunt Kimmie) and dad weren’t even in the barn yet!
She made it around the first barrel, knocked over the 2nd but still finished with a good time….until you add the penalty for the downed barrel. I might have grumbled something about what kind of “show” this might be all weekend. Pretty much repeated the same thing happening for the poles event – knocked over 2 poles. Today was a “woulda-coulda-shoulda” kind of day.
Just to be clear….. I’m the grinch in this suggested optional title and to be honest, a quiet weekend home alone might have been what I thought I wanted. But, as I perused through my google drive of all the things I’ve written while waiting for my website to be up and running again, I came across this list and I was convicted of my grinchy, grumpy heart.
So I here I am…learning from my own list and sharing it with you.
Maybe your grinchy, grumpy heart needs to remember how to grow some gratitude today too.
Maybe we can fix our grinchy, grumpy hearts by cultivating gratitude and thanksgiving by remembering God’s Word and His goodness in our daily lives…regardless of a silly horse and a teenage rider!
Here are 10 practical, scripture-inspired ways to strengthen your gratitude mindset:
1. Journal Your Thanks
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1
Don’t forget to remember: keep a gratitude journal where you write down three things each day for which you are thankful. (I’ve got a link for a gratitude journal here on my website!) Reflect on God’s faithfulness as you review past entries.
2. Write Letters of Encouragement
“I thank my God every time I remember you.” — Philippians 1:3
Don’t forget to remember: Take time to write letters of gratitude to those who have blessed your life. Share how they’ve made an impact, just as Paul expressed his thankfulness for others in his letters.
3. Treasure Spiritual Riches Over Material Possessions
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” — Matthew 6:19-20
Don’t forget to remember: Shift your focus from acquiring possessions to valuing spiritual growth, relationships, and eternal treasures.
4. Avoid Comparisons
“Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.” — Galatians 6:4
Don’t forget to remember: Celebrate others’ blessings and embrace your unique journey. Gratitude grows when you resist envy and focus on God’s personal provision.
5. Be Thankful in Trials
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” — James 1:2
Don’t forget to remember: Even in difficult times, look for God’s hand at work. Trials refine your faith and often lead to unexpected blessings.
6. Pray with Thanksgiving
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” — Philippians 4:6
Don’t forget to remember: Create daily prayers of gratitude, thanking God for His provisions before asking for more. Gratitude shifts your focus from worry to trust.
7. Slow Down and Look for God’s Presence
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
Don’t forget to remember: Pause to savor life’s small blessings—a beautiful sunset, a kind word, or the joy of fellowship. Recognizing these moments fuels a heart of gratitude.
8. Serve Others with Joy
“In all things I have shown you that by working hard…we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” — Acts 20:35
Don’t forget to remember: Shift your focus outward by serving those in need. Acts of kindness often renew your own perspective and deepen your gratitude.
9. Appreciate God’s Work in You
“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” — Psalm 139:14
Don’t forget to remember: Acknowledge God’s work in your life and the steps you’ve taken to grow in Him. Celebrate victories—both big and small—as evidence of His grace.
10. Embrace Gratitude as You Grow Older
“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon.” — Psalm 92:12
Don’t forget to remember: Gratitude deepens with time as you reflect on God’s faithfulness. Use your experiences to encourage younger generations to trust and thank Him.
The sun has set, and the horses are settled in for the night. Tomorrow, we’ll do it all again, riding into the barn carrying the lessons from today. May we approach it with greater gratitude for the experiences each new day brings.
Don’t forget to remember: let gratitude be your daily practice, rooted in God’s Word.
