My internal alarm clock works great – even on a Saturday!
As I groggly checked the time, I rolled over and realized it was time to get up, but not on a weekend. For me to go back to sleep, I started praying for healing about my upcoming back surgery. I prayed for both surgeons, for healing so that one thing doesn’t lead to another, and then I was reminded of a phrase that God has been whispering to me. It has no context…is it about work? surgery? Bible Bites ministry?
It’s just been the phrase that the Holy Spirit whispers to my heart.
He Goes Before You.
That’s it. Four words. One phrase. Endless meanings that roll around in my heart and mind.
This is a promise, that no matter what comes my way, God has already been there and gone before me.
It’s more than a comforting phrase. It’s a biblical promise woven throughout Scripture—a reminder that God is never behind, never late, never surprised, and never uninvolved. Before you arrive in any room, conversation, diagnosis, battle, or blessing, God has already been there.
We like to plan, predict, and prepare—but so much of life refuses to fit neatly into our expectations. And that’s where the phrase “He goes before me” becomes an anchor.
Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV) says: “It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
Notice the order:
He goes before you.
He is with you.
He will not leave you.
You are surrounded—front, center, and back—by the presence of God Himself.
Sometimes the future isn’t scary—it’s just unclear.
You don’t know what the next right step is.
You don’t know which door to walk through.
You don’t know how things will turn out.
But God doesn’t wait on the sidelines hoping you’ll figure it out. He is the God of the path, the God of the process, and the God who prepares.
Psalm 139:5 says: “You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.”
God doesn’t just walk ahead of you—He prepares ahead of you. He sets up provision, protection, wisdom, and strength in places you haven’t even stepped into yet.
Fear likes to shout:
“What if this goes wrong?”
“What if I’m not ready?”
“What if I can’t handle it?”
Faith whispers back:
“He goes before me.”
Faith doesn’t deny the reality of the unknown—it declares the greater reality of God’s presence in it.
When Israel stood at the edge of the Red Sea, unsure and afraid, God wasn’t pacing the shoreline wondering how to help. He already had the path planned—a path they couldn’t see until they stepped forward.
Wherever you are today, here’s the truth you can carry like a shield:
God has already stepped into your tomorrow.
He has already secured what you need. He has already seen the outcome. He has already prepared every place your feet will walk. Nothing catches Him off guard. Nothing intimidates Him. You’re not walking into the unknown—you’re walking into a place God has prepared with love, wisdom, and purpose.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You for going before me.
Where I see uncertainty, You see the whole picture.
Where I feel unsteady, You stand firm.
Help me trust that You are already in my tomorrow, preparing what I will need.
Give me courage to walk forward knowing I am never alone.
