Knowing God: The Foundation of Our Faith
“This is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” — John 17:3 (NIV)
What does it mean to know God? Not just know about Him, but to know Him personally, intimately, and relationally?
In our world of instant information, it’s easy to confuse knowledge of God with truly knowing Him. We might memorize facts, recite verses, and attend church regularly—but God desires something deeper. He wants a relationship that transforms our hearts and guides our lives.
Knowing God begins with Jesus. In John 17:3, Jesus defines eternal life not as a future destination but as a present relationship: knowing the Father through the Son. It’s personal. It’s relational. And it’s available now.
So how do we truly know God?
1. Through His Word:
God reveals Himself through Scripture. Each page is a window into His character, promises, and plans. As we read, we discover His faithfulness in every story, His love in every command, and His grace in every promise. The more we read His Word, the more we recognize His voice and understand His heart.
2. Through Prayer:
Prayer is more than a list of requests—it’s conversation with our Creator. When we speak and listen to God, our relationship deepens. We begin to hear His whisper in our worries and feel His peace in our pain. Knowing God grows as we invite Him into every moment of our lives.
3. Through Obedience:
We come to know God more intimately when we live according to His ways. Obedience is not about rules—it’s about trust. As we follow Him, we see His faithfulness unfold. Every step of obedience opens the door to deeper understanding and greater closeness.
4. Through Community:
God often reveals Himself through others. As we share life with fellow believers, we witness His love in action and experience His truth in fresh ways. Community sharpens our faith and points us back to the One we’re all trying to know better.
